Emlyn Johnson | ‘Skakes’ Album Launch

Thursday, April 22, 2021

Tonight Emlyn Johnson launches his ‘Skakes’ album at Mojo’s Bar.

Emlyn Johnson’s ‘Skakes’ album came out on July 20 last year, but like a new boat stuck in the slipyards, was never really ‘launched’ due to the rough winds of you-know-what. That’s about to change, as the good-ship ‘Skakes’ sails out from Mojo’s Bay April 22, with the magical Rabbit Island, and the sublime Racoo crewing the ropes through the brine, ever watchful of that capricious jib – Set Times.

Johnson, usually a virtuosic solo pianist and reed warbler, will be, on this very special night, accompanied by a band comprising some of Fremantle’s finest providores of carbonated orange peel rhythm. That’s right, those familiar with ‘Skakes’ will be in for a real treat, as songs like ‘That’s Not A Tram It’s A Train’ and ‘Norfolk Pine’ are reworked in a band setting. All album tracks plus a few extras will be performed on the night, no doubt lending weight to the question “Why did you leave ‘Wedding Fight’ off? That was my favourite.”

Variously described as “raw and mysterious”, “Australian-dark-folk-troubadour”, and “a flutist pursuing her doctorate at the Eastman School of Music”. Emlyn Johnson is a distinctive artist, and the launch of ‘Skakes’ is sure to be a jolly good tailwind, whether you’re a gull looking for a chip, or a dinghy on your way back to ship.
