Black Rabbit George

Tuesday, January 28, 2020

If you’ve ever seen Tijuana Cartel then you’ll know just how good a guitarist Paul George is – and he’s even better now having spent some weeks last year honing his skills at a flamenco school in southern Spain.

His side project, Black Rabbit George, illustrates the virtuosity of his playing but also highlights his song-writing and vocals. It’s doom folk-tronica and gypsy flamenco that ranges from deceptively simple songs to driving beats and mesmerising tunes.

He is joined by fiddler Phoebe Corke who makes ill-fated attempts to beat his notes-per-minute high score; local favourite Duncan Strachan will be doing his thing on bass while Jimmy Winwood shows his drumming mastery. The band has played at several major Australian festivals including Splendour in the Grass and had recent airplay on Triple J.

Here in Fremantle for one show only the Black Rabbit will be joined by Broome legend Tonchi, frontman for The Mexicans and The Lonely Horse Band. Originally from Bourke, Tonchi honed his skills in Melbourne before finding his heart country in the Kimberley. He is a masterful songwriter; you can taste the red dust in his tales of Australia, country and people.
